This was the first weekend in a long time that I missed watching most games, but it was for a good reason. I headed to New Orleans for a cousin’s wedding and it was an extremely good time. He’s one of my favorites, and celebrating him and his husband was a beautiful thing. It also doubled as a bit of a family reunion, which made it even more beautiful.
Anyway, what all this means is that I won’t add (much) commentary to matches I haven’t watched yet, but the xG race charts and pass networks will still be there. Feel free to grab and share these if you want, they are for the people (and if you want to plug where you got them from, whomst am I to stop you).

Heavens.
washington spirit 2-0 nj/ny gotham fc
The penalty inflates the Spirit’s xG enough to make this look like a stomping, instead it’s Gotham’s line that’s most interesting (read: oof, if you’re a Gotham fan), and suggests they were well-controlled by the hosts.
Everyone’s circle being the same size, plus the lines between players creating several distinct triangles, shows even distribution in the Spirit’s passing. Gotham love a chaotic high press, so the Spirit kept them chasing shadows.
The only negative is the lack of service from the two base midfielders, Sullivan and Hershfelt, to Croix Bethune.

WHO IS THIS VLATKO? I DO NOT KNOW HIM.
Ok but this is the Vlatko I do know.
portland thorns 4-1 houston dash
seattle reign fc 1-2 chicago red stars
Chicago controlled this game well, and at about the 75th minute decided to limit Reign’s chances and that tiny staircase shows they were quite successful.
Going down 0-2 in the first thirty minutes forced Seattle to finally play forward, but incongruent personnel. The game changed once Tziarra King came on, but that didn’t happen until the 77th minute.
The two early goals created by Mal Swanson (who is absolutely right back to her best form) allowed the Red Stars to manage the game, so not surprised that the pass network shows two clear banks of four.
angel city fc 2-1 north carolina courage
Sometimes it be like that. I am sure Sean Nahas will drop a tweet about it, but without a clinical or volume scorer on the squad, this will happen from time to time.
Wasn’t pretty. In fact, this pass network is super ugly. But smash & mf’n grab.
Lmao. Like I said, this will happen from time to time. Though Tyler Lussi eventually scored, she missed two big chances prior that could have changed the game. Trying to find consistent scorers from the opportunities the Courage create is Nahas’ biggest problem to solve.
